The campus of William Rainey Harper College is pleased to welcome the Illinois Region of Phi Theta Kappa to the Chicago Suburbs for the 2012 June Convention and Regional Awards Banquet on their campus in Palatine, Illinois..
Creating a yearbook is great way for a chapter to have a visual recording and documentation of the past year, and can also serve as a recruiting tool for future members. Three winning yearbooks will be announced at the June Illinois Regional Convention at Harper College in Palatine.
The last official day of the 2012 International Convention arrived with an early start. The first round of marketplace mini-meetings began at 8:30am followed immediately by the day’s first round of Educational Forums. The Fourth General Session began at 10:00am and was opened by International President Tameka Wilson. That morning’s keynote speaker was Phi Theta Kappa’s Executive Director, Dr. Rod Risley, whose address was entitled, “The Community College Completion Challenge”. Dr. Risley covered topics pertaining to college students and their commitment to complete their college degrees.
Friday, April 13, 2012 was the third day of the International Convention. The morning was filled with Marketplace Mini-Sessions, and Educational Forums. During these forums, attendees discuss many issues ranging from the Honors Study Topic to Global Politics and Leadership, and Community Involvement. The Second General Session began at 10:00am, in a now packed auditorium and included an All-Star lineup of guest speakers and presenters.
Thursday morning came with a promise of a busy and exciting start to the convention. With a free schedule until later that afternoon, many chapters took this time to do some sightseeing around the city of Nashville. The top two destinations on everyone’s list were The Country Music Hall of Fame and the Grand Olde Opry House. No trip to Nashville is complete without experiencing authentic Tennessee style BBQ. For us, this was at Jack’s BBQ, featuring Tennessee Pork Shoulder. Statues of flying pigs also adorned each room of the restaurant.
The road to the 2012 International Convention has been a long journey, both figuratively and literally. A year has come and gone since we last met in Seattle. However, within minutes of entering the Gaylord Opryland Resort in Nashville TN, we already start to recognize familiar faces.
Many have yet to start arriving from across the country. This makes the resort itself feel almost empty. As the past has shown us, we know that within 24 hours, thousands of the world’s smartest individuals will descend on this one location. This is the calm before the storm. Within just a short time, this quiet hotel will be bustling with the sound of excitement and buzzing with the energy which Phi Theta Kappans have brought from all over the world. Continue reading

The Lincoln Lock In is a fellowship event combined with team building and civic engagement activities for the Illinois Region. Since the event is largely financed by regional funds, registration per participant will be only $25.00 per attendee.
